Abstract

This study aimed to identify latent growth classes and examine the factors influencing the developmental trajectories of student engagement in four-year universities. Additionally, it investigated the differences in learning and employment outcomes across latent classes. To achieve this, the study utilized data from the Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2005 (KELS 2005) collected by the Korean Educational Development Institute. The sample consisted of 1,731 students enrolled in universities in South Korea. First, growth mixture modeling analysis identified three distinct latent growth classes based on developmental changes in student engagement: student engagement increasing type, student engagement maintaining type, and student engagement decreasing type. Second, multinominal logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the factors influencing classification into these three engagement types. The result indicated that gender, teaching passion, and practical college climate were significant factors. Third, the Wald test was employed to assess differences in learning and employment outcomes among the engagement types. The findings revealed significant differences in both cognitive and noncognitive learning outcomes, as well as job satisfaction. Finally, by providing a comprehensive understanding of student engagement and educational performance in four-year universities, this study aimed to establish a foundation for policy development to enhance the quality of university experience and educational outcomes.
