Abstract
Purpose: The purposes of the study were to examine the relationship between student engagement behaviors and perceived student learning outcomes and to analyze whether the results are different based on academic disciplines, grade level, and the interaction between them. Design/methodology/data/approach: To achieve this purpose, National Assessment of Student Engagement of Learning(hereafter NASEL) developed by KEDI was employed. This study constructed a quasi-panel data including a cohort of 487 students(freshmen in 2011, sophomores in 2012, juniors in 2013, and seniors in 2014) based on three rounds of matched samples. A repeated measure ANOVA using the mixed model design was performed to determine whether or not differences existed in the interaction effects of students in different academic disciplines by grade level. Findings/Results: The results of the analysis indicated that grade levels exerted effects on all variables within the same academic discipline. That is, as the grade level increased, the estimated averages of student activities including class participation, student-faculty interaction and integration of experiences increased. After examining the differences among academic disciplines, findings revealed that meaningful differences were only found in major competencies and professional knowledge. Value: The significance of this study lie in the light of investigating the possible longitudinal effects of college education in the relationships between student engagement and perceived learning outcomes.
