지리학의 대중적 인식을 높이기 위한 노력: 내셔널지오그래픽의 지리교육 캠페인을 중심으로

초록

이 연구의 목적은 지리학의 대중적 인식을 높이려는 다양한 사례들을 분석하고 이를 토대로 우리나라 상황에 적용할 수 있는 방안들을 모색해 보는 것이다. 이 연구에 포함된 사례들은 내셔널지오그래픽의 지리교육 캠페인과 지리 지식관련 설문조사, 영국의 GGiP 캠페인, 전국지리교사모임의 설문조사, 미국 지리학회에서 수행중인 커리어 가이드 프로젝트, 한국고용정보원의 한국직업정보시스템, 지리올림피아드 등이다. 본문의 분석을 토대로 결론에서는 지리학 전공 관련 직업에 대한 조사, 중·고등학교 학생들을 위한 지리 관련 직업 홍보 자료의 개발, 성공적이라고 평가되는 지리 관련 사업들(지리올림피아드 및 전국지리교사모임의 기초적 지리 지식에 대한 설문조사)의 유지·발전, 그리고 각 분야에서 지리라는 명칭을 사용하도록 하는 노력 등을 제안하고 있다.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to understand a variety of efforts to increase awareness of the importance of geography in terms of mass media utilization, geography-related jobs and their advertisement, political perspectives, and constant events. Specific examples discussed include National Geographic-led geographic literacy campaign and geographic literacy survey, Give Geography its Place (GGiP) campaign in UK, geographic knowledge survey administered by the Association of Korean Geography Teachers, Association of American Geographers? Career Guide project, geography-related occupation information by Korea Employment Information Service, Geography Olympiad, etc. It was suggested that we gather and manage geography-related job information systematically and also make them accessible for secondary school teachers and students. It was also suggested that we keep up the good examples such as Geography Olympiad and geographic knowledge survey by the Association of Korean Geography Teachers. Lastly, we need to redouble our efforts to break the neglect of geography by name everywhere.
