본 연구에서는 초등학생들을 대상으로 그들이 가지고 있는 국가정체성을 살펴보았다. 초등학생들의 국가정체성에 관한 상징들은 학년이 높아감에 따라서 그 종류가 급증하고 있으며. 태극기, 애국가 등의 특정 상징의 지배 정도는 학년이 높아가면서 약화되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이는 학년이 높아감에 따라서 국가정체성에 대한 자의식이 강화됨으로써 나타나는 현상으로 보인다. 그리고 국가 정체성의 영역별로 보면, 초등학생들은 저학년에서는 정치적 정체성이, 그리고 고학년에서는 문화적 정체성이 주류를 형성하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이는 학생들의 국가정체성이 정치적 정체성에서 문화적 정체성으로 전환되고 있음과 국가정체성의 주체가 타자 중심에서 자기중심으로 변화함을 보여준다. 반면에 영토적 정체성은 학년과 상관없이 낮게 나타났는데, 이런 결과는 초등학교 지리교육에서 상대적으로 영토교육이 소홀히 다루어진데 비롯된 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
In this study I investigated the children? national identity. As children? grades grow, the kinds of symbols of national identity increase rapidly and ratio of major symbols, for examples, the national flag and the national anthem, the national flower decreases. I think it results in reinforcement and differentiation of self-consciousness on national identity, as children? grades grow. And when I analysed the domains of national identity, in the low grade political national identity is major national identity, and in the high grade cultural national identity is major national identity relatively. It means children? major national identity converts from political national identity to cultural national identity, and national identity transits from another-based to self-based. But territorial national identity is minor in the all grades. It means territorial national identity should be reinforced in elementary geography education.
