본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 초등학생들의 영토 범위 및 위치 인식에 대한 학년별 특성을 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 영토 교육에 대한 시사점과 대안을 제시하려는 것이다. 연구 결과 첫째, 우리나라 초등학생의 국가 구성의 3요소에 대한 인지도는 매우 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 2, 4, 6학년 모두 국가 구성의 3요소에 대한 학습이 이루어지지 않고 있기 때문으로 해석된다. 둘째, 영토 북단의 인식 면에서 매우 혼란스런 특성을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 대한 원인은 관심 부족 및 초등학교 교육과정 상의 영토에 대한 내용 미흡 등으로 여겨지며, 분단에 따른 영토 범위 인식에 대한 혼란도 그 요인의 하나로 여겨진다. 셋째, 백령도, 마라도, 독도 등 영역 설정의 기준이 되는 외곽 섬의 정확한 위치에 대한 인식이 매우 낮은 것으로 파악되었다. 그렇지만 독도에 대한 위치 인식은 상대적으로 높았는데, 이는 교과 및 창의적 체험활동 시간의 독도 교육, 국민적인 관심 등이 종합적으로 반영된 결과로 해석된다.
Abstract
The goal of this study is to analyze how elementary school students view the range and location of our territory, to suggest its meaning, and to give an alternative method for the education about territory. To research the characteristic of the perception of the students toward the three requisites for formation of state, territorial range and the location of outer islands. Students’ grades were classified in three levels: low, middle and high grade. First, the level of awareness among Korean elementary school students regarding the 3 state components is very low. Irrespective of their grades, this phenomenon can be interpreted in terms of lack of learning what the 3 elements of state formation is. Second, they are confused about the division of the Korean peninsula because their school curriculum does not deal with it enough. That is why they are not interested in it. Third, upon analysis of the characteristic of how they perceive the outer islands, distinct understanding differences were proved, according to each island. They had more correct answers about Dokdo than 5 islands in the West Sea and Marado because they received an education in a special curriculum as to Dokdo and because citizens’ interest in this island is high.
