이 연구는 오스트레일리아 빅토리아 주 지리교육과정과 이에 근거하여 출판된 내러티브 지리교과서의 특징을 분석한 것이다. 빅토리아 주 교육과정은 ‘학문기반 학습 스트랜드’에 토대하고 있으며 이에 따라 교과의 ‘영역’이 구분되어 있는데, 지리는 인문학이라는 학문에 기반하여 Level 1-Level 3까지는 ‘인문학’이라는 영역에서 통합적으로 운영되며, Level 4-Level 6까지는 ‘인문학-지리’라는 영역으로 인문학 내에서 지리로 분리되어 분과 형태로 가르치게 되어 있다. Level 4-Level 6 각각에 대한 교육과정의 핵심 부분은 ‘학습의 주안점’과 ‘표준’으로 구성되어 있으며, 표준은 다시 ‘지리적 지식과 이해’, ‘지리공간적 기능’으로 구분되어 있다. Level 4-Level 6의 내용 구성 방식은 학습의 주안점을 통해서 알 수 있는데, Level 4는 오스트레일리아 지리, Level 5는 오스트레일리아와 그 주변 지역(아시아, 태평양, 남극대륙)의 지리, Level 6은 계통지리, 쟁점, 개발교육 등으로 조직되어 있다. 한편, 이 연구에서는 빅토리아 주 ‘인문학-지리’ 영역의 Level 5에 근거하여 개발된 내러티브 지리교과서인 『Heinemann Geography: A Narrative approach』의 특징을 분석하였다. 먼저 단원별 내러티브의 형식과 특징을 개괄적으로 분석한 후, 첫 번째 단원인 ‘지도학습’을 사례로 내러티브의 구성과 특징을 심층적으로 분석하였다.
Abstract
This study is to analyze on the Humanities-Geography in VELS(Victorian Essential Learning Standards) and the feature of geography textbook constituted by a narrative based on it. VELS is based on the discipline-based learning that includes learning domains within it. At level 1 to 3, basic concepts related to geography are included under the general umbrella of ‘the Humanities’, but at Level 4 to 6, the Humanities is divided into Geography, Economics and History. The Geography domain is organized into main two sections, one for each level of achievement from Level 4 to 6. Each level includes a learning focus statements and a set of standards organized by dimension. And the standards in Geography domain are again organized in two dimensions, the geographical knowledge and understanding and the geospatial skills. The organization of content of Geography domain can be known by the learning focus statements, and Level 4 to 6 is organized in Australian geography(including Aboriginal and Torres Islander communities), the regions of Australia and its surrounding it(Asia, the Pacific, Antarctica), and systematic geography and issues including development topic respectively. And this paper examines the characteristic of the geography textbook constructed by a narrative, 『Heinemmann Geography: A Narrative approach』 for Level 5 of Geography domain. The paper outlines the forms and feature of a narrative using in each unit, then analyzes deeply the aspects of an narrative in case of ‘Mapping: Interpreting the Environment’ of the first unit.
