세계시민교육에서 지리교육의 역할과 기여 - 호주 초등 지리교육과정 분석을 중심으로 -

초록

본 연구는 오늘날 관심받고 있는 세계시민교육에서 지리교육의 역할과 기여를 찾아보고 지리교육의 현장 적용성을 제고하기 위해 호주지리교육의 역할과 기여를 분석하였다. 그간 지리교육은 세계시민교육의 핵심교과로 인정받아 왔다. 특히, 호주 지리교육은 세계시민교육의 내용적 측면과 방법적 측면에서 역할과 기여면에서 특별함을 지니고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 분석한 호주 지리교육의 세계시민교육에서의 역할과 기여를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 내용 면에서 자연환경과 인간의 삶을 결부한 장소성, 장소 간의 연결, 세계의 복잡성과 다양성, 그리고 상호 연결망, 글로벌 이슈 등을 통해 세계시민교육의 내용을 학습할 수 있게 구성되어 있다. 둘째, 방법 면에서 관찰, 분석, 현장답사 등의 탐구학습과 GIS, GPS, 구글어스 등 지리정보와 ICT 활용을 통해 글로벌 관점과 지리적 상상력으로 세계에 대한 통찰력을 형성하는 데 도움을 주고 있다. 셋째, 인간과 환경과의 상호작용 관점에서 ‘환경’에의 접근 교육이다. 호주에서는 지리교육을 통해 환경에 대한 교육과 환경을 위한 교육을 위해 인간과 환경과의 상호작용적 관점으로 교육에 접근하고 있다. 이러한 결과는 현재 우리교육에서 세계시민교육과 지리교육과의 관계를 고려해볼 필요를 시사한다.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the role and contribution of geography education for global citizenship education in Australia in order to enhance the applicability of global citizenship education. Geography education has been recognized as a core subject for global citizenship education. In particular, Australian geography education has played a special role and contribution in educating contents of global citizenship education and methodological aspects of the education. The role and contribution of Australian geography education analyzed from the point of view of world citizenship education are as follows: First, in contents, places, connections between places, global diversity, complexity and the interconnection between places, global issues are included in geography education. Second, in methodological aspects, inquiry learning including observation, analysis and fieldwork and using of geographic information such as GIS, GPS, Google Earth and maps help to foster an insight into the global with a global perspective and geographical imagination. Third, in terms of the interaction between people and the environment ‘environment’ is learned to the students. It is the access to education for environmental education on the environment. These results suggest that we consider the relationship between global citizenship and geography education in primary school.
