Abstract
This paper aims to stress the importance of participation in global citizenship education by examining the meaning of participation as an ethical consumer in fair trade, and point out some weaknesses in the school education on participation by examining the class materials of school education on fair trade. The findings and arguments are summarized as below. First, the ethical consumers in fair trade are isolated from other groups, do not share the sense of responsibility with them, and thus play a role of just ultimate consumer who buys the ethical good. Second, current school education of fair trade focuses on giving students a message of hope that people in desperate situation can be better off via fair trade and educating students the sense of re-distributional fairness as an individual consumer based on their conscience. However, students have rare opportunity to learn about the uneven structure of global system and to participate in global activities to improve it. Third, in order to nurture students’ ability to participate as a global citizen, we have to introduce them more to the structural causes of the continued world poverty rather than just making them sympathetic to the different world.
