Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the educational effects of a low-tech remote sensing activity in which students established a classification scheme, performed a supervised classification using papers and pencils, and analyzed change detections. The participants responded that they enjoyed the activities and understood remote sensing concepts synthetically. Furthermore, the students developed critical spatial thinking skills by applying spatial concepts and skills, such as pattern recognition and identification of regional changes, as well as by understanding issues, such as the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) and generalization. This research adds to the literature because it developed a low-tech activity which enables students to experience remote sensing analyses concisely and examined the educational effects of the activity empirically.
