Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore methods of global justice education through development and practice of a geography lesson in social studies. For the purpose, we have tried to lay the theoretical foundation for empathy and social justice as well as geographical education of empathy through literature study. We wanted to develop a geographical class model for global justice education and draw certain implications through practice thereof in the class. The goal is to explore a possibility of justice education from the perspective of geographical education of empathy. The implications of this action research are as follows: First, social studies geography class of empathy is necessary for global justice education. Empathy and social justice are closely related, and global justice education can be implemented more effectively through social empathy. Second, activity oriented class is necessary for student learning. For education of an abstract concept like global justice, it is more effective to have the students learn it through experience or direct activities rather than through explanation of a teacher. Third, when dealing with global justice education, critical reflection of a teacher is necessary. A teacher should be equipped with critical inquiry ability and self-reflection ability for analyzing spatial inequality and difference. This study has significance in that it tried to develop a geography lesson in social studies for global justice education of empathy which has been neglected up until now.
