Abstract

This study investigated effective ways to enhance global citizenship in geography education. Empathic emotion increases altruism, one of the important conditions of global citizenship. Therefore, we examined the effect of the variables to increase altruism. First, we used factor analysis to identify the emotional factors of altruism. Based on the responses to the adjectives presented in the survey, two factors, empathy and emotional pain, were extracted. The two variables set to increase altruism were the difference between perspective-taking and source of information. Participants were divided into ‘imagination group’ and ‘observation group’ according to their perspective, and further divided into a similar-source group and an expert-source group according to the properties of source of information. The empathic emotions and altruistic motives were set as dependant variables and the results were analyzed. As a result, empathic emotions showed a significant difference only in according to the different viewpoints. Helping behaviors also showed significant differences only in terms of different perspectives. In short, this study shows the importance of empathy as a condition of effective geography education contents for global citizenship education and the effects of perspective to cause it.
