오횡묵의 『여재촬요』를 통해 본 개화기 세계지리 지식의 흐름과 변용

Abstract

This study is about 『Yeojaechalyo』, a geography textbook of the late Joseon Dynasty, and aims to reveal the distribution of geographical knowledge and the genealogy of geographical education in the world during the late Joseon Dynasty by discovering how the author of this book, Oh Hueng-mook, obtained information on the latest world geography and wrote the world geography section of 『Yeojaechalyo』. First of all, this study found out specific record that Oh Hueng-muk, mostly known as a local official or a literary writer, was an employee served in Park Moon Kuk as an analysis of the diaries and torture of Oh Hueng-muk. In 1886, when Oh Hueng-mook served, the British ‘The Statesman’s Year-Book’ was completed to translate in Chinses, and the publication of the ‘Hanseongzubo’ and the ‘Mankuk Jung Pyo’ in Park Mun Kuk, he would have been able to see various overseas books and collect materials related to the writing of geography. It is also mentioned that the first of the ten-volume series 『Yeojaechalyo』 is related to world geography, and that it referred to the British political almanac in the legend. This is the same book as the original book of ‘Mankuk Jung Pyo’. Thus, this study wanted to identify the distribution process of global geographical information through comparison and analysis of the “Yeojaechaly” and the ‘ Mankuk Jung Pyo’. As a result, “The Statesman’s Year-Book” appears to have completed two and three chapters of the first volume, referring to the Chinese in translation of “The Stateman’s Yearbook”, “ManKuk Jung Pho” and maps of various countries around the world. However, considering the fact that China was prioritized over Joseon and the emphasis on the imperial family of China, which was different from the “Mankuk Jung Pyo”, we could see the images of intellectuals in the period of enlightenment who were not completely free from Sinocentrism.
