Abstract

It is a known fact that Hegel shared the colonialist views of his time, based on the idea about Africa as a pre-historical place isolated from the rest of history, and about Africans as beings in a state of nature and slavery, lacking the capacity for self-cultivation. Furthermore, it has been argued by several researchers that Hegel’s justification for colonialism is based on other basic theses of his system of thought. In this article, I have three purposes that connect with each other. The first is to outline the whole picture of Hegel’s view of Africa, based on concepts of freedom, the state of nature, and slavery. Next, this article seeks to show in more detail how his view of Africa, thus constructed, reaches the colonial advocacy of slavery in its theoretical arrangement. Finally, it is argued in this article that, despite this arrangement, the link between general theoretical elements and the African view was made possible through logical leaps and arbitrary introductions of unexamined premises, and that these combinations are not of a systematically inseparable nature.
