본 연구의 목표는 헤겔의 역사철학에 대해 비판적 맥락에서 제기되는 ‘유럽중심주의’가 헤겔 자신의 입장에서는 구체적으로 무엇을 의미하는지를 정확히 밝히는데 있다. 엄밀히 말해 헤겔은 ‘중심’으로서의 ‘유럽’을 맥락에 따라 다르게 이해했을 뿐만 아니라, 지리적 여건이나 인종과 같은 자연적이고 직접적인 조건들을 역사 서술에서 결정적인 것으로 간주하지도 않았다. 또한 헤겔은 익히 잘 알려져 있는 ‘세계사의 세 단계’를 논하면서 ‘자유의 원리’와 ‘원리에 대한 앎’의 차이에 기초하여 ‘존재론적 측면’과 ‘인식론적 측면’을 구분하고 이 둘의 상호 연관성을 고려했다. 즉, 인식론적 측면에서 자유에 대한 의식과 앎이 확보되어야만 그렇게 의식하고 아는 주체가 자유롭다고 헤겔은 생각한 것이다. 더 나아가 헤겔이 역사 철학에서 원리로서의 자유를 기준으로 ‘세계사의 세 단계’를 설정하였으나, 이는 어디까지나 원리일 뿐 현실적인 실행은 아니다. 자기의식적인 주체가 자유를 실현해나가야 한다는 점은 여전히 모든 인간에게 역사에서 하나의 과제로 주어져 있다고 헤겔은 주장한다. 따라서 헤겔에게 가해지는 ‘유럽중심주의’라는 비판에 숙명론이나 인종주의와 같은 비난까지 한데 섞는 것은 부적절하다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this essay is to examine closely what eurocentrism in Hegel‘s philosophy of history essentially means. First of all, Hegel didn’t use the word ‘europe’ in order to express a same region, and he didn’t regard natural and immediate conditions like geographical conditions and races as the most important in description of history. In addition he distinguished existential - and cognitive aspects based on the difference between the principle of freedom and the cognition of principle when he discussed well-known three steps of world history. Hegel thought that a subject was free only when consciousness and cognition of freedom was ensured. Furthermore he set up three steps of world history according to the principle of freedom, but this was only a principle but not an actual fulfilment. The subject who has a self-consciousness should realize freedom and this fact was given to all human-beings as a problem. Therefore it is inappropriate to mix somethings like fatalism and racism with eurocentrism that is given as a criticism to Hegel.
