Abstract
The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that the fundamental reason why liberalism cannot extend beyond the establishment of equal basic liberties lies in the internal logic of the deontology upon which it is founded, and that in order to overcome this, liberalism must be reformulated on a teleological basis. This paper explains why a shift from a deontological to a teleological model of liberalism is necessary. To this end, the paper proceeds as follows: It first shows that Rawls's conception of justice as fairness is rooted in deontology, and that the partial return to classical forms of liberalism in his political liberalism is an inevitable consequence of deontology’s inherent logic. The paper then outlines a teleological model of liberalism by using the basic teleological concepts presented in the third part of Rawls’s A Theory of Justice (“Ends”) as a starting point and appropriately expanding them based on the tradition of teleological liberalism as it has developed. It will demonstrate that this model can overcome the shortcomings of the current deontological model. Finally, the paper argues that a teleological model of liberalism can adequately address the reality of reasonable disagreement by grounding itself in a consensus on legitimacy.
