Abstract
This paper explores a comparative philosophical approach to new materialism and traditional Korean Gi-hak(氣學), using fungi as a central case study. Fungi, which constitute the majority of Earth’s biomass, form extensive ecological networks and act as decomposers. Despite lacking brains or nervous systems, they exhibit affective responsiveness and adaptive behaviors, positioning them as potential examples of nonhuman agency. From the standpoint of new materialism, which emphasizes matter as active and relational rather than passive, fungi may be reconsidered as intelligent, thinking entities. This study engages with the theories of Eduardo Kohn and Steven Shaviro to critically examine the possibility of recognizing fungal responsiveness as a form of distributed intelligence. In parallel, the philosophy of Choi Han-gi, a 19th-century Korean thinker, offers a resonant framework through his notions of gi(氣, vital energy), shingi((神氣 agentic spirit), and unhwa(運化, transformative flow). His concept of chucheuk(推測, speculative inference based on sense and experience) shares affinities with Shaviro’s affective speculative thinking. Through this dialogue, the paper considers whether fungi’s ecological roles and communicative capacities can be philosophically understood as forms of nonhuman thought. Moreover, fungi can be situated within Choi Han-gi’s Gi-hak, which recognizes matter not only as physically grounded but also as imbued with vital biological energy. Drawing on artistic and literary examples-including Kim Choyop’s fungal science fiction novel The Dispatchers, Jae-Rim Lee’s “Mushroom Burial Suit,” and Natalie Jeremijenko’s “Wet Kiss”-the paper situates fungi within broader aesthetic and cultural imaginaries of symbiosis. Ultimately, following Jeremijenko’s formulation of fungi as thingkers (thinking things), the paper proposes that fungi offer a compelling model for rethinking intelligence, agency, and coexistence in a posthuman ecological age.
