신유물론의 부상은 다시 한 번 마르크스주의의 유물론의 차이를 묻지 않을 수없도록 하고 있다. 마르크스주의 유물론은 생기적 유물론, 사변적 실재론, 객체지향존재론, 물이론 등 도처에서 출현하는 신유물론과 어떻게 다른가. 우리는 마르크스주의의 유물론의 정체성을 파악하는 데 중요한 참조점이지만 동시에 거의 금기에가깝게 무시되어 온 엥겔스의 자연변증법을 찾는다. 엥겔스가 자연변증법을 통해개진한 유물론은 과학주의나 물리주의, 자연주의 등의 숱한 비난에 시달려야 했다. 저 유명한 루카치의 엥겔스의 자연변증법 비판을 필두로 숱한 이들은 엥겔스를 마르크스주의의 역사유물론으로부터 분리시키고자 애써왔다. 이를 통해 자연은 생산과 노동이라는 매개를 통해 사회와 상호작용하는, 즉 실천과 노동 혹은 매개라는개념을 통해 주어지는 대상으로서 간주되어 왔다. 나아가 엥겔스의 자연변증법은사고 속에서만 가능한 것으로 간주되는 변증법을 자연 자체에 투사하는 잘못을 저질렀다는 비판을 받아왔다. 이는 마치 모순과 적대라는 사회적 실재에 고유한 변증법을 자연과 세계에 적용하는 부조리한 이론적 과대망상으로 치부되었다. 그러나이 글은 엥겔스의 자연변증법에 대한 이러한 독해를 재고할 필요가 있음을 주장한다. 특히 이 글에서는 “헤겔의 잘못된 예”에 따름으로써 비롯된 엥겔스의 과오라는루카치의 단언에 주목한다. 여기에서 말하는 헤겔의 잘못된 예, 즉 헤겔의 “자연철학”은 물 자체와 현상 사이의 구별을 극복하고자 한 독특한 시도로서 사변적 유물론의 윤곽을 제안하고 있다. 그리하여 우리는 헤겔의 잘못된 예를 따른 엥겔스의잘못이라는 주장을 전도하여 그것이 엥겔스로 하여금 소박한 유물론을 돌파할 수있는 가능성을 가져다주었음을 주장할 것이다.
Abstract
With the increasing rise of New Materialist discourses against anthropo- centrism everywhere, we are forced to ponder the identity of Marxist materialism. In this article, we re-visit Friedrich Engels’ Dialectics of Nature and its related texts, which have been underestimated and even dimissed over the past century. His thought about nature, being, subject and dialectics in major works have been criticised as being imbued with scientism, physicalism, dogmatic metaphysics, and naturalism. Against the grain, in this article, we assert to need to rethink Engels’s dialectics of nature in order to reconstruct Marxist materialism and combat the impact of New Materialist discourses. In particular, we suggest reconsidering the phrase “following Hegel’s mistaken lead” mentioned in Lukács’s text, and fearlessly approve of Hegel’s Naturphilosophie and its ontological thought. Hegel’s thought was an attempt to traverse between being (substance) and thought (phenomenon), retaining crucial lessons of critical philosophy since Kant’s Copernican turn. Therefore, reversing the insistence that Engels fabricated naturalist materialism by following Hegel’s mistaken lead, this article states that Engels’s dialectics of nature paved the way to overcome naïve materialism and idealism.
