Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of gifted education using Korean Educational Longitudinal Study data collected from the year 2006 to year 2014 by comparing to the academic achievement of those who participated in gifted class and those who are not in the gifted class although having the similar family background and capacity. As one of quasi-experimental designs, propensity score within-cluster matching method was adopted to ensure equivalence between participants(treatment group) and non-participants(control group) especially concerning SES and previous academic achievement. More participants were found to get into selective high schools and gain high achievement in high school years. Higher college entrance rate was also shown in the participants. The education aspiration level of participants were higher than non-participants. In aspects of self-regulated learning, participants had shown the high level of intrinsic motivation and autonomy and independence in learning. Through the research we concluded that gifted education were effective in nurture the innate ability and capacity and some suggestions were made such as enlargement of gifted education, development of gifted program which reflects the psychological characteristics, necessity of gifted longitudinal study.
