Abstract
The present study analyzed the effects of homogeneous grouping in gifted students' academic performance and cognitive ability, emotional and social development, creativity and career development. The study also examined the effectiveness of homogeneous grouping across different types of groupings (full-time and part-time), subjects (math/science, humanities, and mixed), and school levels (elementary, middle, and high school). We analyzed 37 studies about the homogeneous grouping of gifted students that were published in SSCI and KCI journals from 2006-2022.. The results showed that homogeneous grouping had a positive effect on the academic performance and cognitive development in gifted students. Furthermore, it improved their social skills and alleviated negative emotions, but had no significant effect on career development. Part-time homogeneous grouping was found to be more beneficial for the development of academic performance, cognitive ability, and social development of gifted students compared to full-time homogeneous grouping. Mixed subjects were also found to be more effective when it comes to learning activities. Gifted elementary and middle school students' academic performance improved significantly, while only a small positive effect was observed in the case of social and creative development, limited to elementary school students. Based on our findings, the educational implications and direction for future research in homogeneous grouping were discussed.
