Abstract
This study estimated a monetary policy response function that incorporates the Financial Stress Index (FSI) as a key explanatory variable, reflecting the fact that financial stability has been newly designated as one of the Bank of Korea’s policy objectives since 2011. The analysis shows that, since 2000, Korea’s monetary policy has been conducted within a framework that adjusts the benchmark interest rate by comprehensively considering recent domestic and international financial conditions as well as the real economy, rather than relying primarily on forecasts of an uncertain future. Furthermore, while economic growth was given relatively greater weight before the global financial crisis, the emphasis on price stability has been strengthened in the aftermath, in line with the addition of financial stability responsibilities and rising global inflationary pressures.
