초록

This study explores the motivation behind U.S. female soldiers' applying for special operations by using Panofsky's iconography framework to analyze recruiting posters from the documentary novel, Ashley's War (2015) by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon. Panofsky's framework comprises three stages of interpretation. In the pre-iconography stage, I initially delve into the primary meanings associated with elements such as the M16 and female soldiers adorned with special operations badges in the posters. Experiencing curiosity upon seeing the poster, female soldiers develop an interest. In the iconography stage, I look the combination of these elemental motifs that make the deeper meanings that fuel the aspirations of female soldiers to join the military and feel the band of sisterhood. In the iconography, I analyze that the societal implications of female soldiers participating in combat and the evolving nature of contemporary warfare are undergoing transformation.
