초록
This study explores how the female soldiers dispatched to the war in Iraq are represented in Helen Benedict’s novel Sand Queen (2012). There are three American female soldiers—Third Eye, Yvette and Kate—who symbolize typical figures of female soldiers. First, Third Eye, who showcases 'female masculinity' by acting like a man, undertakes the prostitute role that strengthens the sense of homogeneity and raises the morale of the male soldiers. Second, Yvette is the strangeness that must be excluded from the military. Third Eye and Yvette symbolize either 'non-existence' or 'the prostitute' constructed through strong masculinity. The difference between these two soldiers and Kate is that she has changed from 'the militarized femininity' that forces the female soldier to be effeminate to a monster with a twisted body. Kate's monstrous body implies that in order for a woman to enter the army, she must face how her femininity can be applied towards military morale and masculinity.
