Abstract

This study investigates the transformation of media discourses surrounding the image of female soldiers in South Korea by analyzing news articles published between 1993 and 2025. Female soldiers in South Korea have long internalized a dual identity—situated between their roles as professional military personnel and as gendered beings—shaping the dynamics of military cohesion, barracks culture, and spiritual combat power. Using data from the Korea Press Foundation’s BigKINDS database, this research applies semantic network analysis to trace diachronic changes in key terminologies and themes within media representations. The findings reveal two distinct phases. From 1993 to 2013, female soldiers were primarily depicted within a meritocratic discourse, expected to perform combat duties equivalent to those of their male counterparts. However, since 2013, media narratives have increasingly portrayed female soldiers as victims of sexual violence or as subjects requiring institutional protection—thereby reinforcing gendered identities and diminishing their professional agency. The media’s reproduction of such discursive shifts has contributed to the marginalization of female soldiers, emphasizing victimhood over leadership and competence. This dual expectation—between gendered vulnerability and professional performance—has significant implications for gender equality, mutual trust, and service motivation, all of which are central to enhancing the military’s spiritual combat power. Ultimately, this study argues that the evolving image of female soldiers is not merely an issue of representation but a strategic and institutional concern. How female soldiers are recognized, supported, and integrated into the organizational structure remains a decisive factor for the sustainability of the armed forces and for strengthening gender-inclusive military ethics and culture.
