Abstract
The death of Christ is the central theme of Paul’s theology and a fundamental point of departure for both his theology and teaching. Paul interprets the death of Christ as sacrifice, vicarious suffering, substitutionary atonement. Especially, Paul’s interpretation of Christ’s death rests upon two convictions concerning the meaning of the death. Firstly, the Apostle firmly believes that Christ died on the cross as sacrifice. This conviction is found in the expressions in (1) Paul’s free use of sacrificial formulae from the LXX interpreting the death, and (2)his evoking ideas of the OT-i`lasth,rion(i.e. “sacrifice which purifies from sin”), “passover lamb,” and “sin-offering,”-in order to highlight certain aspects of its meaning. Specifically, Christ’s death is the sacrifice which established the “new covenant.” This is shown (1)by Paul’s reference to the covenant in 1 Cor. 11:25 and 2 Cor. 3:6, along with (2)his frequent use of the language of covenant “righteousness” in association with the death. Secondly, another conviction of the Apostle concerning the cross is that Christ’ death was an act of God, carried out in righteous fulfillment of His promise to Abraham that He would bring the “blessing” of righteousness to all nations. In other words, “God’s expression of His righteousness” toward Abraham took the form of the “new covenant,” or “God’s expression of His righteousness” toward all nations. Finally, Paul interprets Christ’s death in terms of establishment of a covenant, righteousness involving Gentiles as well as Jews. In conclusion, Paul firmly believed that Christ died on the cross as i`lasth, rion, sacrificial offering, in order to save all people, both Jews and Gentiles. In other words, he proclaimed the gospel of Justification by faith that both Jews and Gentiles become the people of God by His grace. Thus we can conclude New Perspective scholars are shrinking the extent of the Justification by faith with the premise of Covenantal Nomism arguing the difference between Jews and Gentiles in way of salvation, and that limiting the meaning of the death of Christ contradicts Paul’s thought. Such arguments squarely contradict Paul’s statement “it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Rom. 1:16, ESV)”, and ignoring the universality of sin, they contradict Paul’s teaching “both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin (Rom. 3:9, ESV)”.
