Abstract

This phenomenological study aimed to explore and describe the counseling experiences of gifted education youth participants to reveal the essential meaning and structure of their experiences. For this, Giorgi’s phenomenological method was used by finding common traits between all participants through individual specificity while presenting individualized counseling, and general characteristics of these experiences. A total of 6 participants were selected to provide insights and give meaning about their experiences. They had all received counseling at least 5 times within the past 5 years. The results revealed the following 10 categories: ‘Confusion as a marginal person,’ ‘Effort towards normality (top),’ ‘Performance (asceticism) that cannot be given up,’ ‘Beginning of difficulties, burial, and ecdysis,’ ‘Relief through professionals,’ ‘Counseling in which one found unconventional perspectives,’ ‘unfamiliar experience in counseling,’ ‘Practical counseling is helpful with solving problems,’ ‘Counseling in which one’s agency is restored’ and ‘Counseling in which one recognized one’s existence and freedom. ’By synthesizing these categories, the implications of gifted counseling were derived.
