Abstract
Bernard Williams insists that the reason for action is internal in having an agent’s ‘subjective motivational set’ and ‘sound deliberative route’ as a necessary condition. Also, he insists that there is only an internal reason and no external reason for action. However, Parfit, who supports external interpretation, claims that there is a normative reason to pursue whatever the agent’s motivation is, and that the agent will recognize a reason and be motivated to act in accordance with the reason if he or she is rational. According to Parfit, normative and natural facts are non-reductable and they not only have their own domains but also make a normative claim from normative facts only. And an agent, if substantively rational, recognizes a normative reason and is motivated to act. However, Parfit’s argument is not so satisfactory enough to confirm that normative arguments can only be made from normative facts. Furthermore, it is difficult to expect the objective convergence of reasons in the realm of ethics. Moreover, specific agent is constrained by her motivation and deliberation, and these constraints are prior to the concepts of objective facts or real interests. Williams includes the substantive ethical dispositions in the content of the self. The self has a reason for act through practical deliberation from the ethical point of view it has already acquired, where the normative force in internalism come into.
