Abstract

Ethical discussions on animals have focused on farm animals and laboratory animals, and discussions on pets have been minimal. Such discussion is needed because pets are more usual around us and more familiar to us than farm animals and laboratory animals. This paper tries to ask the fundamental question of whether the existence of a pet itself is ethically correct. Even if a pet receives affection from humans, we must ask whether it is ethically correct to have a pet born. To that end, we propose three models, Toy, Dependent and Companion Models, which are modified from the two models of Furuh and Wirchnianski. I will show that pets do not fit anywhere on these three models. In this process, the dependence and vulnerability of pets will be mainly discussed. I conclude that we must stop pets from being present until there are other suitable models for pets.
