연구 목적: 본 연구는 순차통역에서 연사의 발화 속도에 따른 통역사 노트테이킹의 변화를 분석하고자 한다. 기본적인 연구 가정은 연사의 발화 속도가 빨라졌을 때 노트의 내용 및 구성에 변화가 나타날 것이고, 이 때 구체적으로 노트에 어떤 변화가 나타나는지 고찰해 보고자 한다. 연구 방법: 이를 위해 서울 소재 통번역대학원 한영과 2학년 학생들을 대상으로 동일한 텍스트를 학기 초에는 일반 속도로 낭독하고, 학기 말에는 1.5배 빠른 속도로 낭독하여 두 가지 노트테이킹 자료를 확보하여 분석하였다. 연구 내용: 보다 구체적으로, 동일한 텍스트에 대한 노트테이킹에서 발화 속도가 1.5배 빨라졌을 때 나타나는 1) 양적인 변화, 2) 노트 내용 상의 변화, 3) 형식 및 형태 상의 변화를 중심으로 분석해보고자 한다. 결론 및 제언: 분석결과 연사의 발화속도가 빨라졌을 때 1)노트 분량이 줄어들고, 2) 세부 정보가 누락되나 핵심 요소는 보존되는 경향을 보이고, 3) 의미 단위를 나누는 가로선의 개수가 줄어들거나 글자체의 변화를 확인할 수 있었다. 더불어 2학년 1학기임에도 노트테이킹 스킬 측면에서 여전히 학생들 간의 편차가 다소 나타남을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 통역 모드에 상관없이 연사의 발화 속도가 통역의 품질을 영향을 주는 만큼, 연사의 발화 속도와 순차통역에서 노트테이킹 간의 관계를 살펴보고 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다고 하겠다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the changes in interpreter’s note-taking according to the speaking speed of the speaker in consecutive interpreting. The basic research assumption is that when the speaker’s speech speed increases, changes will occur in terms of note amount, content and composition. Also, this study examines what types of specific changes occur in the notes. To this end, the same text was read at a different pace at the beginning and end of the semester for sophomores in the Department of Korean-English at a graduate school of interpretation and translation in Seoul, Korea, thereby two note-taking data sets were collected and analyzed. More specifically, in note taking for the same text, when the speech rate is 1.5 times faster, we will analyze 1) change in note quantity, 2) change in note content, and 3) change in the note format and form. The analysis has shown that when the speaker’s speaking speed increases, 1) the amount of notes taken is reduced, 2) detailed information tends to be omitted, but key elements tend to be kept, and 3) the number of horizontal lines dividing semantic units decreases and changes in fonts are spotted. In addition, it was found that even in the first semester of the second year, there is a gap among students in terms of note-taking skills. This study holds significance in that it examines a correlation between a speaker’s speech rate and note-taking in consecutive interpreting, as the speaker’s speech rate affects the quality of interpretation regardless of the interpretation mode.
