연구 목적: 이 연구는 가와바타의 전후(戰後) 작품인 『도쿄 사람』을 중심으로 도쿄라는 공간적 특성과 함께 중년 남녀의 삶을 중심으로 분석하였다. 중간소설이라는 장르가 당시의 도쿄라는 풍물과 중년 남녀의 삶을 규명하는 유효한 자료로 활용되는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구 방법: 가와바타가 순문학에서 중간소설을 집필하기까지의 과정을 살펴보았다. 가와바타는 전후 일본 미의 전통에 집착하여 작품을 집필하였는데, 전쟁을 방관만 하지 않았다고 볼 수 있는 것이 신문 연재소설 『도쿄 사람』이라는 작품이다. 연구 내용: 전후의 시간이라는 설정으로 전쟁미망인 시라이 게이코의 삶과 출판사가 도산 위기에 빠진 시마키 슌조의 삶을 통하여 남녀 간의 잘못된 사랑은 물질만능주의에 따른 변질되고 이기적인 인간 심리에서 온 것임을 확인하였다. 공간적인 관점으로는 도쿄의 풍물과 도쿄인의 불안정한 생태를 분석하였다. 결론 및 제언: 고도성장기의 도쿄라는 공간적 특성으로 본 일본 중년 남녀의 정서적인 고독의 차이를 고찰할 수 있는 자료가 될 것이다. 또한, 도쿄에 거주하는 도시인들의 생활상 연구에도 활용할 수 있다. 중간소설 연구가 인접 관련 학문과의 상호 발전까지도 기대할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study analyzed the lives of middle-aged men and women along with the spatial characteristics of Tokyo, focusing on Kawabata's post-war work The People of Tokyo. The purpose of this study was to use the genre of middle-aged novel as an effective material to investigate the life of middle-aged men and women and the traditions of Tokyo at the time. As a research method, Kawabata looked at the process from pure literature to writing intermediate novels. Kawabata was obsessed with the tradition of Japanese beauty after the war and wrote her work, but it can be seen that she did not just stand by the war is her newspaper serial novel Tokyo People. Set in post-war time, through the life of Geiko Shirai, a war widow, and the life of Shunjo Shimaki, whose publishing company was on the verge of bankruptcy, it was confirmed that the wrong love between a man and a woman came from the degenerated and selfish human psychology caused by materialism. From a spatial point of view, the scenery of Tokyo and the unstable ecology of Tokyoites were analyzed. Through this process, it will be a data to consider the difference in emotional solitude of middle-aged Japanese men and women in terms of the spatial characteristics of Tokyo in the period of rapid growth. In addition, it can be used for research on the lives of city dwellers living in Tokyo. Intermediate novel research can be expected to develop mutually with neighboring related studies.
