Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of oral reading and reading-while-listening activities on EFL students’ attentional focus and retention of processed language input. A group of middle school students participated in a theme-based program course, where they engaged in either oral reading or reading-while-listening tasks on a weekly basis. The goal was to determine which method would be more effective in their recognition and subsequent acquisition of new vocabulary on one hand and their comprehension of the given text on the other, while trying to identify problems that might occur when implementing such procedures in regular classroom settings. The results showed that the two methods did not make a significant difference in the students’ attention to and retention of vocabulary, but that reading-while- listening activities enhanced students’ reading comprehension to a larger degree than oral reading did. This implies that oral reading requires students to disperse their attention to phonetic information and articulation so that their cognitive resources available for the process of meaning are comparatively deficient.
