Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of verifying the double mediation effect of internalized shame and depersonalization in the relationship between perceived childhood emotional abuse and the severity and function of non-suicidal self-harm. To this end, data were collected for adults aged 19 or older and 38 or younger, and a total of 183 people were used for analysis. The results of this study were as follows. First, perceived childhood emotional abuse, internalized shame, depersonalization, and the severity/function of NSSI all showed a positive correlation. Second, in the relationship between perceived childhood emotional abuse and the severity of NSSI, internalized shame and depersonalization showed mediating effects respectively, and a complete double mediating effect was also confirmed. Third, the completely double mediating effect of internalized shame and depersonalization was confirmed in the relationship between perceived childhood emotional abuse and the Intrapersonal positive reinforcement of NSSI. Therefore, This study shows that attention needs to be paid to intrapersonal positive reinforcement of NSSI when considering the prevention and intervention of NSSI, suggesting the need for follow-up studies on mediator variable.
