Abstract

This study aimed to verify the roles of emotion regulation difficulties, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) expectations, and NSSI beliefs in the relationship between internalized shame and NSSI. A self-report survey was conducted on 295 adults aged 19 and older, using the Internalized Shame Scale (ISS), the Korean version of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (K-DERS), the NSSI Expectancy Questionnaire (NEQ), the NSSI Beliefs Scale (NSIBS), and the Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury (ISAS). The results of the study are as follows: First, internalized shame, emotion regulation difficulties, NSSI expectations, NSSI beliefs, and non-suicidal self-injury all showed positive correlations with each other. Second, emotion regulation difficulties, NSSI expectations, and beliefs were found to sequentially mediate the relationship between internalized shame and NSSI. Specifically, NSSI expectations fully mediated the relationship, while NSSI beliefs partially mediated it. Third, among the sub-factors of NSSI expectations and emotional regulation difficulties in the relationship between internalized shame and NSSI expectations, partial mediation effects were observed for emotion regulation, communication, and pain expectations. Similarly, partial mediation effects were found for the sub-factors of NSSI beliefs, including depersonalization, suicide prevention, self-punishment, interpersonal influence, and escape beliefs. Based on these findings, discussions and recommendations were provided.
