Abstract
This paper attempts to present changes in the voice of the speaker in John Keats’s early sonnets and the impetus behind the altered voice. This study analyzes a personal voice that the poet projects in his sonnets as he plays a poet-speaker’s role; as well as an objective voice, created as he deliberately keeps the sonnet speaker at a distance. As a result, this study proves that Keats’s early preoccupation with the power of subjective self caused a personal voice in his poems; and that the poet could represent an objective voice when he freed himself from the overwhelming influence of subjective self. Thus, this study could reveal that the poet’s changing attitudes regarding subjective self played an important role in shaping Keats’s poetics.
