Abstract
This paper intends to demonstrate John Keats’s consistent preoccupation with the selfhood as a poet in his early sonnets. This study examines the way in which the poet represents in the sonnet the inwardness of the selfhood that affects the creative poetic process; and the poet’s anxiety, from the elevated selfhood, to secure his own place within the literary tradition. As a result, this study shows that Keats’s absorption in the tradition, repeated in many of his early poetry, starts from the strong confidence in his selfhood as a poet; and that Keats’s self-making mode allows him to build a viewpoint whereby he could frame his early poetic idealism within the forms of poetry. Thus, this study could show that the poet’s belief in the power of his selfhood became a strong and persistent driving force throughout his poetic career.
