초록

This paper attempts to show how John Keats’s early sonnets in 1817 represent the poet’s confidence in the development of poetics as well as the intense commitment to ideal poetry. This study examines the way in which the poet’s two early sonnets on a laurel crown disclose his own strong ambition for poetry, heightened after the publication of Poems in 1817; and how his juvenile enthusiasm for poetry is much refined in the sonnet, “On the Sea.” As a result, this study shows that when Keats’s passion for poetry was at its height, the sonnets played an important role to establish his own poetic identity; and that, with his sonnets, the poet could embark on the composition of his mature poems. Thus, this study could show that Keats’s early sonnets are a manifestation of his early poetics as well as an autobiography, revealing the story of Keats’s poetic progress.
