Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyze how the themes of reincarnation and redemption work together in the Korean epic stories Chunhyangjeon in English translation by Rutt & Kim (1974) and Shimcheonjeon by Pihl (1994). Both narratives recount similar tales of heavenly sprit beings who are incarnated into human bodies as punishment for transgressions they committed in the sprit world. Both women must lead lives of virtue, devotion and filial piety in their human forms in order to redeem not only themselves, but the sins and absurdities of the entire society. This study deals with the connected themes of reincarnation and the subsequent redemption that results, which appear in two of the best-known classical Korean literary works, and demonstrates that these themes are accessible to readers across the world from multiple different cultures.
