초록

This study explores pre-service biology teachers’ understanding of natural selection concept using the clinical interview method. In particular, this study compares the pre-service biology teachers’ understanding of natural selection shown in interview method to those shown in multiple-choice assessment and open-ended assessment method. In addition, this study uses the network analysis in order to thoroughly see the causal relations among scientific and non- scientific ideas of natural selection such as variation, heredity, and need/goal ideas. Thirty pre-service biology teachers participated this study and were given four items for interview. The Pearson correlation method, paired sample t-test, and network analysis were used. The results showed that scores of interview methods were more correlated to the scores of multiple-choice assessment than the scores of open-ended assessment. The comparison of total scores and concept diversity scores between interview and open-ended assessment revealed that a substantial number of participants did not show important concepts even though they knew the concepts. The network analysis revealed that some scientific ideas such as limited resources were meaningfully related to non- scientific ideas such as need/goal idea. Based on these results, this study suggests the implication for the effective open- ended assessment and teaching method for natural selection concept.
