Abstract

Actor-Network Theory(ANT) is recently the most compelling academic theory in the areas of Science and Technology Studies(STS), social science, humanities, geography, ecology and social medicine since it first appeared in the early 1980s. This paper is intended to seek epistemological reflection and methodological possibility which Actor-Network Theory provides to social science and North Korean studies. For this purpose, this paper introduces main assertions and core concepts suggested by ANT in the first place and contemplates its meaning in social scientific cognition and methodology. Secondly, this paper mulls over a methodological implication given to North Korean studies by ANT through critically review of existing North Korean studies. Thirdly, this paper looks for research themes of North Korean studies to which ANT can be applied and methods which can contribute to future research. In conclusion, I think that the application of ANT to North Korean studies can serve as a theoretical alternative to overcome methodological narrowness shown by North Korean studies so far and will give an opportunity to reflect on epistemological limitations caused by inertia of division system and cold war.
