Abstract

The studies on classical songs and poetry in the late Chosun dynasty and the era of enlightenment have been steadily researched since the middle of 1930's until when it recognized as one of the academic subject in recent years. The main reason of getting the attention from the academic fields is said to be the distinctiveness of the era when the waves of western civilization forced the course of modernization in Korea peninsula. In addition the most of materials about the classical songs and poetry were constructively created during this period. As a consequence the study on the classical songs and poetry in the late Chosun dynasty and the era of enlightenment becomes one of the favorable subject which contain various controversies. The main purpose of this paper is to inquire the recent status of the research of classical songs and poetry in the late Chosun dynasty and the era of enlightenment. The studies on the Korean classical literature were apparently started with a focus on the method of the study, the controversial issues and to suggest the urgent problems. The major issues on the classical songs and poetry in the late Chosun dynasty and the era of enlightenment can be summarized as follow: the problem of modernity, the problem of popularity, the problem of consumers and the problem of enlightenment. Moreover, the issues on the gender, writing method, detailed reality and transformation of genre can be added to the further research field of area. In conclusion, the classical songs and poetry in the late Chosun dynasty and the period of enlightenment may be expected to attract further attentions of the researchers to extend the related field of research.
