본 논문은 1950~60년대의 연속성과 차별성이 근본적으로 어디에서 비롯되는지를 살펴볼 수 있는 키워드로서 ‘재건(Reconstruction)’이라는 용어에 주목한다. 이를 통해 그동안 학계에서 관행적으로 쓰였던 ‘재건’이라는 용어가 특정한 역사적 시기에 특정한 역할을 담당한 담론으로서 기능하였다는 것을 밝혔다. ‘재건’에는 제2차 세계대전 후 수립된 한반도 남쪽의 신생 독립국가 대한민국이 스스로의 정체성을 확립해 나가는 과정에서 어떠한 고민을 하였는지가 고스란히 담겨있다. 이 때문에 ‘재건’ 담론의 내용은 정체성을 구성하는 네 가지 키워드—‘민족’, ‘반공’, ‘자본주의 근대화’, ‘국민’의 상호 연관성에 따라 시기별로 강조점이 달라졌다. 정부수립기에는 상대적으로 ‘민족’과 ‘국민’이 강조되었고, 전쟁기에는 ‘국민’과 ‘반공’이, 전후에는 ‘자본주의 근대화’ 논의가 두드러졌다. 또한 1960년대 전반기에는 ‘반공’과 ‘자본주의 근대화’가, 후반기에는 ‘국민’이 다시 강조되었다. 1950년대까지는 이러한 고민이 정부에서 뿐만 아니라 지식인들 사이에서도 폭넓게 논의되었던 반면에, 1960년대에는 이를 국가가 전유하고 독점함으로써 국가와 연결되지 않은 민간 지식인들의 재건 담론까지 모두 관제화되고 말았다. 곧 국가가 재건의 대상에서 재건의 유일한 주체로 전이됨으로써 왜곡의 길을 걸었던 것이다.
Abstract
Examining This thesis focuses on the term “Reconstruction” as a keyword that makes us recognize the origins of continuity and distinction between the 1950's and the 1960's. From this, it is revealed that the term “Reconstruction” was used habitually within academic circles, while functioning as a discourse which played a specific role at certain times. Reconstruction is a kind of the consciousness about to things, focusing on the problems of the Republic of Korea [Daehanminguk], a newly-independent country after World War II in the process of establishing its own identity and showing and propagating the identity to its people. Reconstruction is a process of answering not only the question, “What are we?”, but also “What are we not?”, “What do we want to do?”, and “What do we want to be?” These questions correspond to the key words―nation, anti-communism, capitalistic modernization, and nation(people). The core concepts of Reconstruction were capitalistic modernization and nation(people), in addition to nation and anti-communism in the whole period from the 1950's to the 1960's. Until the 1950's, the debates about Reconstruction progressed widely between intellectuals as well as the government. On the contrary, in the 1960's, the government possessed Reconstruction exclusively and made it a government-controlled issue that Reconstruction discourse of civil intellectuals who were not connected to the government. In other words, Reconstruction discourse followed a distorted path by diversion from the object to the sole subject.
