Abstract
This paper aims to reconstruct the earlier history of the Korea Mission [KM] of the Presbyterian Church in the US [PCUS]. It covers the period from Underwood’s speech at the annual meeting of the American Seminary Mission Alliance in Nashville in October 1891 to the arrival and settlement of the first group of eight missionaries in Seoul, their initial mission station, in November 1892. This paper weaves together various historical fragments of individuals and events that influenced the commencement of KM of PCUS, presenting them as a coherent narrative. By reassessing and rewriting its earlier history, the paper corrects existing inaccuracies and incorporates new facts. Their exploration journeys to Honam in 1893-94 is only addressed from the perspective of identifying the names of the Korean language teachers and helpers. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of existing narratives and then examines the origins of the the Korea Mission of PCUS. Chapter 2 examines the origins of KM of PCUS, focusing on Mr. Underwood’s pivotal role. It details his keynote address at the 8th Annual Convention of AISMA held at Vanderbilt University and his efforts to garner support from the hesitant Executive Committee of the Board of Foreign Missions of PCUS. The chapter also highlights Underwood’s collaborative initiatives with Reynolds, Jenkin, and Davis in Virginia, a significant hub for PCUS overseas missions. They toured several cities to generate interest in Korea. Following the discontinuation of European missions, PCUS resolved to initiate mission in Korea, recognizing it as a promising new frontier. Chapter 3 frames Underwood’s travels across Virginia against the backdrop of the baptism of Mrs. Bae Sun, wife of Korean Minister to US Lee Chae-yeon, which occurred in Salem, Virginia in July 1892. The chapter explores the implications of this event in the inception of KM of PCUS. Chapter 4 introduces Rev. Cameron Johnson, whose earlier activities have not been fully explored. Mr. Johnson initiated Mrs. Bae’s baptism and independently arrived in Busan in October 1892. A week later Miss Linnie Davis arrived in Busan with Mrs. Bae. Johnson and Davis reached Seoul on Oct 18, 1892, becoming the first missionaries of the PCUS in Korea, However, due to a lack of sustained support from their home churches, Mr. Johnson had to relocate to Japan in the spring of 1892. Chapter 5 chronicles the establishment of KM in Seoul with seven pioneering missionaries. It discusses the identification of the Korean language teacher and identifies him Mr. Park who was converted from Catholicism to Protestantism in 1893. In the conclusion the paper emphasizes Moffett’s role in the establishment of KM of PCUS, its adoption of the Nevius method and Honam as the location of the mission stations.
