Abstract
Environmental ethics is an emerging field of philosophy born in the late 20th century and its influence has been expanded very quickly. At the early stage, East Asian thought was regarded as an alternative outlook and was received with great enthusiasm by Western environmental pioneers, but it was observed that East Asian thought was rapidly alienated from the mainstream discourse of environmental ethics. For example, environmental ethics has become essential to the content of higher education programs in many countries around the world but East Asian thought is often neglected in the curriculum. Why is East Asian thought estranged from the environmental education despite its widely recognized capacity of cultivating ecological sensitivity? This paper explores what is the relevant contribution of East Asian ecological outlook to the contemporary environmental discourse.
