초록

The poetry of Sin-Suk Jeong has been misunderstood until now by the researchers and almost all readers of his poetry. The fixed public view of Sin-Suk Jeong's poetry is that his poetry is the idyls or pastorals which are not concerned with the social and historical problems. But recent study of his poetry confirmed that his more important poems are those anti-Japanese resistant poems. The aim of this paper is to examine Sin-Suk Jeong's resistant poems written in 1930's. The main features of those poems are as follows; in the first place, the purpose of those poems is to expose the Japan's merciless rule over the Korean people, and to express the wrath of the poet against it, which is based upon his sense of justice, freedom and his moral courage. In the second place, that resistance is expressed by means of the nature imagery such as 'dark night', 'heavy snows', 'typoon', 'bamboo', 'camellia', 'deer', 'lamb', 'dove', etc. Those resistant poems can be classified into the passive resistant poetry and the positive resistant poetry. In the former we can not find the strong will to defy and fight against the Japanese rulers and the hope for the liberation from the Japanese rule which are found in the latter. In conclusion, this study explained and emphasized the reason why we must think that the more important poems of Sin-Suk Jeong, in views of the painful colonial situation of 1930's, are not his idyls, but his resistant poems against Japanese rule, such as 'Do you know the faraway country?', 'The sad composition', 'The beautiful heart', 'I'll become rather the Blue Bamboo', 'The Room', 'The sad Siberia', included in The Candle Light and The Sad Idyl.

Abstract

The poetry of Sin-Suk Jeong has been misunderstood until now by the researchers and almost all readers of his poetry. The fixed public view of Sin-Suk Jeong's poetry is that his poetry is the idyls or pastorals which are not concerned with the social and historical problems.
