Abstract

This paper studies the change of the image of the snake wife in the story of White Snake in the script for story-telling. As a snake wife, Madam White Snake is a monster image in the Song and Yuan Dynasty, and a sad wife image with human nature and demonicity in the Ming Dynasty, and a wifely image getting rid of the demon completely in the Qing Dynasty.The change of the image of snake wife is directly related to the attitude of husband.The different images of snake wives in the legend of White Snake in the script for story-telling bear obvious brand of the times. The snake wife in the story of Song and Yuan Dynasties is marked by the thought of ‘calamities caused by women’. In the story of Ming dynasty, woman’s charms and lust were affirmed. In the story of qing dynasty, Women should become more rational and more conservative.In addition, the image of the snake wife in the script for story-telling is influenced by the development of literature. Most of the monsters in ghost novels can’t get along with human beings peacefully. Popular novels in the Ming dynasty paid more attention to human relations. Under the limitation of the code of ethics, the genius and beauty novels in the Qing dynasty eupraise the sincere feelings of human beings.
