This research aims to compare the similarity and differencein vocabulary strategy use between EFL and CSL learners. Therewere 217 subjects in Taiwan participated in this study. Vocabulary Learning Strategy Inventory was conducted to identifythe strategies for both EFL and CSL learners used to learnEnglish vocabulary or Chinese characters. SPSS is employedto analyze the data collected. The results showed that two ofthe strategies used by EFL and CSL learners are different andthe other 16 strategies used are the same. The outcome revealedthat vocabulary learning is similar across these two languages. Thus EFL and CSL teachers can facilitate learners to applytheir first language vocabulary learning strategies and transferthose to second/foreign language learning. In the meantime, teachers ought to pay attention to the fundamental differencesbetween the two languages to help learners to seize the vocabularylearning strategies based on the language features specifically.
