초록
The English word such has been claimed to be categorized into “intensifying” such, which intensifies the following adjective or gradable noun, and “identifying” such, which helps establish the reference of a following noun. The two types of such have also been analyzed to be syntactically different (Altenberg 1994, de Monnink 2000). In the present study, we attempt to provide a uniform analysis for such, suggesting that such in all cases are pronouns and occupy the head of a determiner phrase.
Abstract
The English word such has been claimed to be categorized into “intensifying” such, which intensifies the following adjective or gradable noun, and “identifying” such, which helps establish the reference of a following noun. The two types of such have also been analyzed to be syntactically different (Altenberg 1994, de Monnink 2000). In the present study, we attempt to provide a uniform analysis for such, suggesting that such in all cases are pronouns and occupy the head of a determiner phrase.
