초록
This paper proposes an analysis of English degree expressions. Built on the syntax-driven approach, I posit an adjectival extended projection GP as the locus for gradability, which is responsible for the formation of gradable predicates. A DegP, which consists of a degree quantifier and its complement degree clause, occupies the Spec of GP position. Adjectival predicates head-raise to the G head, resulting in gradable predicates, whereas nominal predicates require much or many to support the G-head as a last resort. The syntactic analysis presented in this paper directly maps with the semantic interpretation, observing the compositionality in both adjectival and nominal comparative cases.
