Abstract
This paper examines the impact of military expenditure on economic growth considering external threat variable. There are a lot of literatures on the relationship between economic growth and military expenditure, but its findings are often contradictory and inconclusive. External threat is an important variable in the relationship between military expenditure and economic growth. The literature about relationship between military expenditure and economic growth without external threat variable can have omitted variable bias. Using Fixed effect, SYSTEM-GMM, Bias Corrected LSDV estimators, we examine the growth effects of military expenditure, country threats in unbalanced panel of 82 countries during 1984-2003. We find that higher country threat variable separately lead to lower economic growth, but higher military expenditure is less detrimental to growth when a country threat variable is high.
