Abstract

Touch DNA refers to the DNA that is left behind from skin cells when an object is touched or handled. Recent studies show that an individual's genetic profile can be generated from swabs taken from objects touched by hands. This study demonstrates the applicability of Touch DNA providing a tool for crime scene investigations and the need for caution when Touch DNA samples are collected at the scene of the crimes through theft cases producing an individual's genetic profile from touched items. In three of five cases, the suspects were identified through established DNA databases of DNA profiles from convicted criminals and suspects in the National Police Agency and Public Prosecutor’s Office. Although DNA typing in the rest of two cases is unable to identify a suspected person, it is expected to be useful for further investigation with DNA profiles generated. In order to obtain successful full DNA profiles, it should be considered on the potential for secondary transfer of DNA, contamination, some factors that can affect the amount of DNA and proper collection/storage of the Touch DNA items.
