Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate studies using brain imaging for lie detection. The neural correlate of the impaired ability to tell a lie was investigated. Previous studies using functional neuroimaging were reviewed with pivotal research results in lie detection. Cognitive processes associated with deception were examined. Prior neuroimaging studies showed greater activation during lie detection in the prefrontoparietal network including prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and parietal lobe, and suggested the relevance of subcortical brain structures such as amygdala and caudate nucleus. Requirements for deception are theory of mind, emotional processing, and executive functions such as working memory, attention, conflict monitoring, decision making, response inhibition, and response monitoring. The limitations of brain-based lie detection and directions for the future research were discussed.
